I learned to sew at a very young age. I remember how much fun it was to flip through the pattern books and run my hand over the bolts of fabric and think about creating something really wonderful.
Sewing is becoming one of the lost arts these days, taken over by giant craft stores selling pre-made kits that only require a tube of glue to give anyone instant success.
I am grateful that in this day I don’t have to make my and my family’s clothes to have something to wear. But it is really awesome to be able to know when I sit down at a sewing machine I could if I really had to.
Paired with the fact that school budgets are cutting art and FCS classes left and right (known as “home-ec” when I grew up), and that the price of any trendy item of clothing is enough to feed a small country, I decided to offer a new feeling of success to the younger crowd.
And my idea for Summer Sewing Camp was born.
I’ll be offering Beginner and Intermediate sewing classes for ages 8 and up during the month of July. Campers will learn to operate a home sewing machine (one machine per camper), sew basic stitches, sew in a zipper, make button holes, and tackle various hand sewing techniques. They’ll learn this while making their own PJ pants, tote bag, and other accessories. Campers can also move along to making some basic dresses and/or shirts, all in the latest and greatest styles.
Camp will run from 9am-12pm Monday-Friday, starting July 8th through August 2nd. The cost for Sewing Camp is $195/week. All supplies and fabric will be provided, although campers may elect to use their own fabrics. Camp will be held at the Becker Window Fashions/Serendipity Home Studio in Boyertown. The maximum amount of students per week is 7. This will ensure plenty of student/teacher time with hands-on instruction.
